What's New In The Meta Quest 3 | Should I Upgrade My Quest 2?

5 min read

Find out what the Meta Quest 3 has to offer and we pose the question on everyone's lips: is it worth upgrading your Quest 2? Meta are going full steam ahead with their release of the Quest 3, so we thought we’d give you the lowdown on it’s features and how they’ll affect your viewing experience of VR porn

Why are Meta releasing the Oculus Quest 3?

The Oculus Quest 2 has been an extremely reliable all-rounder headset with an accessible price point that allowed huge numbers of people to enjoy virtual reality and VR porn, but technology is advancing rapidly. The general consensus in the VR world is definitively trending towards incorporating mixed reality and augmented reality experiences, and the Quest 3 has been designed with a sharp focus on the issue. However, it also comes with a whole raft of other features and upgrades that we believe make the Quest 3 a game changer for mixed reality and a substantial upgrade for our high quality virtual reality content. Let’s get into all its features and specs.

What will the Oculus Quest 3 look like?

Stylish. We love the look of the new Quest 3, its 3 front cameras have a futuristic vibe that sets a cutting edge visual tone for the headset. One of the biggest improvements is its thinner body. The Quest 2 wasn’t terrible to use, but due to its wide front, it shifted the center of gravity of your head and did feel like it was weighing you down after extended use. The Quest 3 is basically the same weight, but is crucially much thinner. That means you’ll find it more like wearing a pair of goggles than a large headset. A big plus where immersion is key.

Its specs are impressive too, with 8GB of RAM up from 6 on the Quest 2, 110 degree horizontal and 96 degree vertical field of view, and Meta’s brand new 4K+ Infinite Display, two LCDs with pancake optic lenses coming out with a resolution of 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye, more than anything currently on the market. It also uses the much-discussed Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processing chip, which Meta says gives the Quest 3 twice the processing power of the Quest 2. They aren’t playing around!

Will the Quest 3 improve my VR porn watching experience?

At BaDoink studios we believe quality is king in VR porn, and we have to tell you we’re very happy with the overall improvement that Meta has made with the resolution. After some negative speculation about a single screen we’re delighted to tell you they’ve gone with high resolution dual screens displaying 2064x2208 per eye, which they claim is a 30% increase on the Quest 2’s resolution. Everyone breathe a sigh of relief! Crucially they’ve also introduced the pancake lenses mentioned in the paragraph above. Their claim is that this increases the quality around the field of view edges by a massive 70%, improves image clarity in the center by 25%, and reduces chances of seeing blur in your periphery, or when your eyes are not perfectly aligned. Speaking of which, they’re adding greater sensitivity to their lens positioning technology for greater user customization.

What does this mean for watching VR porn on BaDoinkVR? Well, a whole heap of improvements are on the way. If the Quest 3 is a success, it means a headset with mass appeal will finally catch up to the quality that we’ve been filming in. We’re moving quickly towards 8K and remastering popular scenes from our back catalog, and we know from using the Quest Pro (which has lower quality screens) that the resolution and lens makes a huge difference to immersion and viewing quality. For viewers and our audience, it means less moments that take you out of the magic, a more total immersion experience, and a greater ability to look around and enjoy everything our stars and scenes have to offer.

When is the Oculus Quest 3 coming out?

You can pre-order your Quest 3 already, in both 128GB and 512GB models. It goes on sale officially on the 10th of October, so we are just under a week away from the first truly dedicated mixed reality headset going on sale! The future is now.

How much will the Quest 3 cost?

We’re amazed at how reasonable Meta have managed to keep pricing on this one now that all of its features have been revealed. The 128GB model is retailing at $499.99 and the much larger (4x) model is retailing at $649.99. This author has the smaller Quest 2 model and after a while of having less storage, management sometimes became a pain. That doesn’t mean it’s not possible, and for lighter, more casual users the 128GB is more than ample. But for those heavier users who are committed to VR, we honestly recommend the larger model to prevent constantly juggling content. You also future-proof your device by extending the storage. We have to say that when compared with the Oculus Quest Pro and Quest 2, the Quest 3’s feature to price ratio is extremely reasonable. You are getting serious bang for your buck with the headset and bar the lack of eye tracking which would add significant cost to the headset, we can hardly think of anything they’ve left out.

Our point (or should I say field) of view...

The Oculus Quest 3 is a serious foot forward in Meta’s attempts to dominate the next generation of headsets in the same way that the Quest 2 became the most popular choice of the last gens. We think that for most users it’s going to be worth the money in either storage size depending on their usage. When discussing a VR porn watching experience, the more ergonomic design is going to increase immersion, removing the bulk from the headset and with a significantly improved strap. The headset’s pancake dual LED lenses offer a greater, significantly less out of focus field of view and improved immersion, and I mean… we love a sleek Apple product but at 7 times the price we simply wouldn't recommend a $3500 headset for casual users. Despite its lack of eye tracking and rear battery, the Quest 3 is looking like a serious upgrade on its predecessor and for the price point, here at BaDoink, our opinion is that it’s worth the money for the huge increase in quality, processing power, and usability.
